It’s likely that your relationship with time could use a little TLC. Have you ever stopped to consider how you view time amidst the constant whirlwind of lists, meetings, deadlines, and to-dos? If you find yourself seeing time as a thief, a demanding boss, or a tricky adversary, it might be worth reflecting on that today.
I’ve been where you are—drowning in a sea of responsibilities, always striving to manage my time more effectively. The harder I tried, the more dissatisfied I felt. Completing tasks and being “productive” didn’t bring me the fulfillment I craved. It was only when I recognized this dissatisfaction that I knew something had to change. That realization was the beginning of a transformative journey, one that helped me build a healthier relationship with time.
Traditional time management often feels like an unending race against the clock. We create rigid schedules, prioritize tasks, and measure our worth by how much we accomplish. While this approach can boost productivity, it often leads to stress, burnout, and a persistent sense of dissatisfaction. I remember asking myself, “Is this really what life is meant to be?” I knew I wanted more than just racing through my task list only to feel exhausted at the end of the day. It was clear: a change was necessary.
Reframing Time
When I shifted my perspective from managing time to investing it, everything changed. I began to see time as a precious asset, one that I could allocate toward meaningful experiences and relationships. Instead of merely checking off tasks, I started asking myself, “What do I want to invest my time in today?” This included intentionally planning activities that brought me joy. I even developed a Sunday planning process I call "Think-Sift-Shift," which helps me prioritize what truly matters and ensures I don’t overlook the moments of happiness in my week. In a recent podcast, I share my process. Check it out!
Focusing on Quality Over Quantity
This new mindset freed me to prioritize quality interactions over the sheer number of tasks completed. I made a conscious effort to spend time with family and friends, engage in hobbies, and create lasting memories. Whether it was a simple dinner with loved ones or even a spontaneous outing, these moments became the highlights of my life, enriching my relationships and enhancing my overall happiness without guilt.
I also took a critical look at the tasks I had taken on. Many no longer served me, yet I struggled to step back from obligations I had outgrown. It wasn’t easy to disentangle myself, but I realized that using my time meaningfully for the life I envisioned was far more important than maintaining commitments that no longer resonated with me.
Setting Intentions
Setting intentions for how I wanted my time to look and feel was another game changer. This practice helped me clarify what truly mattered. I started asking myself questions like, “What experiences do I want to nurture?” and “Which relationships need my attention?” By aligning my time investments with my values, I discovered a greater sense of fulfillment.
Of course, life still throws surprises our way. But with clearer intentions, I found it easier to navigate the bumps in the road, as I was focused on what truly mattered to me. This proactive approach brought simplicity and clarity to my weeks, allowing me to commit to what was important.
Improved Meaning
Investing time in relationships has strengthened my bonds with family and friends. These connections are a source of support and joy, reminding me that life is about the people we share it with.
Increased Satisfaction
Research shows that spending time on experiences rather than material possessions leads to greater happiness. I can attest to this. Moments spent laughing with friends or staying in on a quiet evening working towards a personal project leaving me feeling more fulfilled than any completed task ever could.
Personal Growth
Dedicating time to my personal growth has also been transformative. Whether through self-care, learning new skills, or pursuing hobbies, investing in myself has led to a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in my life way more meaningful than any number of checked boxes completed.
Practical Tips for the Transition
This shift opened up a whole new way of seeing time—a perspective that has truly transformed my life for the better. I invite you to reflect on your own relationship with time and consider how a small change in perspective might bring more joy and fulfillment into your days.
Shifting from time management to time investment is not just a change in habits; it’s a transformation in how we view our precious lives. By prioritizing relationships and personal growth, we can cultivate a richer, more fulfilling life.

~ especially those of us who can be a little off-center trying to function and find fulfillment in the mainstream world. This world values efficiency and productivity, which can require productivity techniques and hacks that some of us find
too mundane and soul-crushing, if not impossible to follow.
For me, I've found I can't follow mainstream productivity tools and hacks. I've had to learn to drive my brain, use its quirks and creativity to feel seen, make contributions to the world, and enjoy both work and home.
I like working with smart people who are ready to dump conventional productivity techniques to learn their true personal productivity by understanding how to drive their brains and discover their unique strengths to redesign their days with systems that complement them.
