Creating Meaningful Moments: A Self-Care Guide for the Festive Season

Have you ever noticed how, when your time starts to shrink, your stress tends to expand?

The holiday season can quickly turn into a whirlwind of tasks and to-do lists, making it so easy to lose sight of the joy that this time of year is meant to bring. It’s all too common to find ourselves caught in a cycle of planning, preparing, and checking off lists, which can drain the joy even from our favorite traditions.

When the holiday spirit begins to feel hijacked by the endless tasks, it’s becomes important to combat the "to-dos" mentality by nurturing your self-care routines adding more enthusiam and joy when monotony starts takeing over and holiday spirit takes a nose-dive, I suggest that you consiously choose to do one of these three strategies to bring you out of the rut:

  • Include your favorite in the schedule
  • Invest in a relationship
  • Create an intentional break

Seem impossible? Here's a few thoughtful ways to add a touch more self-care into the holiday chaos, helping you stay grounded and connected to what truly matters.

1. Increase Time Doing Your Favorite Things

Embrace the joy of the season by rediscovering your favorite activities.

Baking Day: Set aside a special day to bake your beloved holiday treats with friends or family. Not only is it a delightful way to bond, but sharing your goodies can spread warmth and connection to others.

Music Playlist Creation: Create a festive playlist filled with your favorite holiday songs. Play it often, and let yourself get lost in the music—dance, sing, and enjoy the uplifting energy it brings.

Outdoor Activities: Embrace the beauty of winter by spending time outdoors. Whether it’s building a snowman, sledding, or taking a peaceful walk in the snow, these activities can refresh your spirit.

Crafting or DIY Projects: Tap into your creative side! Engage in a fun crafting project, like making holiday decorations or personalized gifts, to express yourself and add a personal touch to the season.

Reading for Pleasure: Carve out time each day to immerse yourself in a good book, whether it’s a classic holiday story or something new that sparks your interest.

Movie Marathon: Host a cozy movie night featuring your favorite holiday films. Snuggle up with snacks and blankets, and let the magic of storytelling fill your heart.

Mindful Moments: Take a few moments each day to journal or practice gratitude, reflecting on the beauty of the season and the things you love most in your life.

2. Invest in Relationships

The holiday season is a perfect time to nurture your connections

Virtual Coffee Date: Schedule a video call with a friend or family member. Enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea together, catching up and sharing in the holiday spirit.

Group Outings: Plan a fun shopping trip with loved ones. Turn what might feel like a chore into a joyful outing filled with laughter and companionship.

Holiday Card Making: Get creative and make personalized holiday cards to send to loved ones. Share your thoughts and well wishes, and spread joy through your heartfelt messages.

Cooking Together: Organize a virtual or in-person cooking session with a friend. Preparing a meal together can be a delightful way to bond over shared recipes and laughter.

Game Night: Host a game night, whether in-person or online, with family or friends. Enjoy board games or video games that bring everyone together for a night of fun.

Shared Hobbies: Engage in a hobby you love with someone special. Whether it’s painting, crafting, or gardening, sharing these moments can deepen your connection.

Story Sharing: Take time to share stories or cherished memories with loved ones. This practice fosters understanding and strengthens your relationships.

3. Build Intentional Breaks

Amid the hustle and bustle, intentional breaks can be a true gift

Slow Mornings: Dedicate time in the mornings to savor a warm drink while journaling or meditating. Starting your day slowly can set a positive tone.

Unplugged Evenings: Choose one evening each week to unplug from all screens. Use this time to read, work on a puzzle, or enjoy a relaxing bath—let yourself unwind.

Nature Walks: Schedule regular walks in nature. Connecting with the outdoors can provide a refreshing escape and help you recharge.

Mindful Breathing: Incorporate brief mindfulness or breathing exercises throughout your day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. This can ground you and alleviate stress.

Cozy Pajama Days: Plan a day to relax in your pajamas, allowing you to recharge without obligations. Spend the day doing what brings you comfort, whether that’s reading or watching movies.

Tea Time Ritual: Set aside time each day for a calming tea ritual. Focus on the flavors and the moment, allowing yourself to pause and reflect.

Gratitude Journaling: Spend a few minutes each day jotting down what you’re grateful for. This simple practice can cultivate a positive mindset and remind you of the joys in your life.

You know what I find fascinating? It's our differences

~ especially those of us who can be a little off-center trying to function and find fulfillment in the mainstream world. This world values efficiency and productivity, which can require productivity techniques and hacks that some of us find

too mundane and soul-crushing, if not impossible to follow.

For me, I've found I can't follow mainstream productivity tools and hacks. I've had to learn to drive my brain, use its quirks and creativity to feel seen, make contributions to the world, and enjoy both work and home.

I like working with smart people who are ready to dump conventional productivity techniques to learn their true personal productivity by understanding how to drive their brains and discover their unique strengths to redesign their days with systems that complement them.

Let's start exploring together!
